How to is really a big question here, seems like there are no one around you giving you the perfect answer to this question. It is a big issue, it is a hard decision, you wonder if this is possible? Art & Career means Art & business, you been wonder really? An art business? They seem to be just a pair of un-matching couple. We often hear that artist/artisans/crafter don't survive well, they are poor, they have no money, they only live in their own world, they are highly emotional driven group of people and if they are going to be famous, they will only be famous after they died. Is this true or false? True, someone did try and fail said that. False, someone has been really successful and make it to the 5th avenue eg. Jimmy Choo. Hence, the answer is actually true & false. In this quick informative world, it is not that difficult for solo artisan in any form to be connected to their audience anymore. There are many platforms online and offline which a solo artisan could have participated and be active in it.
So, what are the crucial keys here? See the 8 keys below to kick start your art career:
1. Decision
You have to make a decision of starting your art career, no one can make this decision for you. You are the only person who take care of your own passion, if you don't, no one else would. But hey hand on, you will be saying, 'I don't know everything yet!' Just remember this, no one has to know everything to start something and no one is born with knowing everything on day 1. You will pick up more skills each day when you grow.
2. Think of your special art ideas.
Think about exactly which form of art you like to embark on, we only have a pair of hand and time that same as everybody else. Spend time thinking on what you are offering, how you are offering it and where you can promote your offer. Write them down on a piece of paper. It is fine at this point that you do not know what a business plan is, just write a plan in the simplest form, you can refine it later as when you learn more.
3. Validate your ideas
Talk to someone else to validate your ideas. See, this is where and what has stopped most people from even moving out the first step. As when we talk about our ideas to our family, friends or spouse, they are strongly against it or friendly denying the idea. Most of the time we talk about our ideas too early, before it is mature, before we think it through and most of us would have done this as the first step instead of after making the decision and thinking through the plan. (A-ha....... No wonder.....)
Talk about your ideas to the right group of people, look around for someone who is already doing it, who is steps ahead of you, be genuine and take courage to strike a conversation and ask for their opinions. There are a lot of generous people who are willing to share ideas with you. At this point, you will still hear a lot of opposition even you have made up your mind. Remember that birds with the same feather flock together, our friends and family are like us, what we are lacking, so are they.
4. Refining you plan & further research on your materials
At this point you will want to start doing a spread sheet. Think of how much you need to come up with for materials and any incurring cost. Work backward and see how much sales that you need to have to cover that up and how long would it takes. Think also on how much time in reality you can spend on this passionate project of yours. Are you going to be full time in this? Or part time? Figure out the hours that you like to start with.
5. Just do it
Now, you have done your research and think through almost every step. It is about time to start your passionate career. Everyone has a different starting point, think about where your starting point is and set aside the hours as you have planned to work on it.
6. Be persistence
It is fine to be slow, but always remember to be persistence. Nothing will works without being persistence. Rome doesn't build in one day. Persistence sustains your passion.
7. Stay focus.
Stay focus on what you are passionate about, do not let anything or anyone distract you from it. Focus protects your passion. It is not a easy thing for everyone to find their passion in life, you will be surprise most of us don't and the majority whom discover it, buries it with disbelief. Protects yours and don't let anyone steal it away from you.
8. Take action
No dreams or passion can turn into realities without action. It is the bridge that link our decisions, ideas to result. Take a whole lot of action until you see the result. Keep doing, trying, pushing, learning and experimenting until the result have no choice to come your way.
We all know this is cliche already, "if you can't love what you do, do what you love."
