How to Grade Gemstone for Fresbies

Natural gemstones are really hidden gems of our mother earth. They are actually the result of different type of chemical reactions happening under ground. From these reactions, different type of gemstones or crystals are formed.

We found that people make use of them in different ways. Psychic use them as healing stones to attain power, modern beauty technology incorporate it in their therapy treatments. And for some others, we use it in jewelry or art decor making.

As unique as every single each of us, each type and piece of gemstones has its own distinctive character and colours.  It is normally judge by the 4 'Cs', which is colour, cutting, carat weight and clarity.

Gemstones are available in all ranges and values, some types and ranges are so affordable that anyone can afford a piece or more.

The knowledge of understanding gemstones can be so vast and deep that it requires a professional Gemologist to examine on the stones for its originality. According to gemologist knowing the 4 ‘Cs’ will be the best guide for those who want to learn how to grade gemstones.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN 4Cs?

COLOUR
Generally, the more intense the colour of the gem, the more valuable it is. However, when it is too dark, eg. A dark green on Jade, it will be consider as an over matured stone and sometimes people will call it ‘old’ stone. As the most appreciative colour for jade is vivid green, therefore dark color jade will have lesser value than the vivid green ones.Like wise happen to the light color jade. Vise-versa, this principal applies to all stones and each type of stones has its most appreciative colour according to its own hue and range.

CARAT WEIGHT
The value of the stone are affected by it's weight. However, the heavier stone might not be necessarily bigger. That is because of the density of the stones varies in its type and also its quality. Hence, we find that gemstones are often individually priced.

CLARITY
The clearer the stone is the higher the value. But, some stones are exceptional, such as Sunstones, Amber and Rutilated  Quartz. The more inclusion in those stones  mentioned the higher the value. You can check the stones under sunlight if possible, if not under bright light.

CUTTING
Faceted stones are much favorable among all and required more work to carry out on the stone, therefore it is most valuable compare with polished and rough gemstones. And, polished stones are more valuable than rough stones too.

The faceted pink Amethyst below although light in color but its value increased by its clarity and cutting whereas although there are no faceted cutting on the polished Amethyst but its value lies in its natural intense purple color. Both the stones are actually having about the same value on each of their packages offer. They are about the same size and weight too.

Each piece of stones are unique, just as unique as us, there are no 2 pieces on earth which are exactly the same. They are not all necessarily expansive as they are available in all ranges. It is more about finding the one that match us.

Wish you finding yours soon. :)
